Starting with our 13th season, Manifest launched a new annual cash award of $2500. The annual Grand Jury Award is a seasonal capstone recognition awarded to one work from among all those exhibited on-site at the gallery across the season. The winner is selected by the year's numerous jurors in a final post-season process each year.
Special Announcement! Because Manifest was founded by artists for artists...
As of fall 2021 with the launch of our 18th season, in light of the struggles we have all faced during the covid-19 pandemic and in an effort to give back more in support and recognition of artists achieving excellence, we are doubling the amount of this annual award to $5000.

** Seasons 17 and 18 were greatly impacted by the Covid pandemic, delaying the jury and award process. Season 17 Grand Jury Award was recently announced. Seasons 18 and 19 will be announced in the coming months. Season 20 represents a new format.
DETAILS OF THE GRAND JURY AWARDS
- For season 20 the new Grand Jury Award format will result in the awarding of $1,000 to one work during each of our nine exhibition periods. This expands our support from one to up to nine artists each year, and allocates 80% more funding to recognize the merits of exhibited works.
- Based on jury scores the highest scoring work from each exhibit of the period (usually we present three or four exhibits per period) is added to the pool of candidates for the Grand Jury Award. Occasionally multiple works tie for the high score in some exhibits. Juries for the exhibits are conducted 'blind' without reference to the artist's personal info, location, or background. Jurors are volunteer experts in art and design from across the United States, including professors, working artists, curators, gallery directors, and others qualified and trusted to provide sound objective judgment of the works provided. Each jury usually consists of roughly 5 jurors, and sometimes more than 10. Jury groups are shuffled and changed from exhibit to exhibit, so a pattern does not result. (Learn more about the Manifest jury process here.)
- At least one work per exhibition will be included for consideration.
- Multiple works which each received the same high score in their respective jury process will each be included in the Grand Jury Award pool.
- Candidates are determined by original exhibition jury scores alone, which consist of as many jurors' scores.
- Every exhibitor across the season, excluding the Manifest Prize Winner*, will be eligible. (The Manifest Prize is a separate cash award process and solo exhibit.)
- There is no requirement for artists to resubmit works. Consideration is automatic based on exhibition participation. Every artist's work submitted to an exhibit is a potentially candidate.
- Finalists and the winner will be announced by the end of each of nine exhibit periods across the season, and posted to this website (see links above). Upon finalization the winning work will also be announced via social media channels, and in an end of season press release. The cash award of $1,000 will be conveyed shortly after the conclusion of the exhibition period.
- Solo exhibitors, or one-off curatorial projects, will have the exhibit's candidate work selected by the artist, the curator, Manifest's staff, or a combination based on consultation. Only one work may be included in consideration from each solo exhibition.
- Prior to season 18, the amount of the award was $2,500. It was increased to $5,000 for seasons 18 and 19 in light of the impacts of the pandemic on artists around the world. It was then increased to a total of $9,000 to be awarded in $1,000 increments across our nine exhibit periods. Winners whose works are included in a subsequent exhibition remain eligible for the Award indefinitely.
WHY THE GRAND JURY AWARD
- To heighten the reward for involvement in our nonprofit competitive exhibition jury process.
- To make an even deeper impact on the career path of the winning artist.
- To add value to having achieved high scores in the peer-based jury process, and to recognize this publicly as an award of distinction and merit.
- Infuse enthusiasm and an investment in the whole of each Manifest season, and to celebrate the outcome of the suite of exhibitions.
- To give back, and provide incentive for achievement and risk taking.
Manifest's nonprofit gallery exhibition schedule includes a range of exhibits across each season, running late September through mid-September every year. Each season includes an average of 35 different exhibits, ranging from solo shows, annual projects, and thematic group exhibitions unique to each season.
Manifest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit operated by a small team of volunteers and staff consisting of students, artists, and teachers. Our first goal has always been to ensure that Manifest's exhibition programming is meaningful to those who make it possible—the artists without whose works the Manifest exhibitions could not happen. Our efforts to publicize, document, showcase, and celebrate each exhibition form the basis of our commitment. Manifest's exhibitions have such a valued reputation that simply passing through the jury process and being included in a show is seen as an award in and of itself. However, we are always searching for new ways, within our limited means, to add value and underscore the importance of excellence in the visual arts—to make an impact on those who honor us with their involvement and trust, our creative colleagues around the world.
Note: As of 2021 the name of this award has been revised from the Manifest Grand Jury Prize to the Grand Jury Award in order to clarify and differentiate it from the annual Manifest Prize which is a completely separate submission-based award that grants $5,000 to one artist.
