Katie St.Clair was born in 1984 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received her BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati (Valedictorian) in 2006. While attending the AAC she was granted studio space for a semester at Parsons School of Art and Design (New York City in 2005). In her senior year she was awarded two major traveling scholarships: the Academie der Bildenden Künste München [(Munich Academy of Fine Art) (Munich, Germany in 2006)] a two month long residency program, consisting of classes and a studio; and the Wilder Traveling Scholarship. In the latter program, she traveled throughout Germany, Austria, Italy and Greece, submerging herself in art, culture and food. She has also taken part in artist residency programs in New York City at the Canal Street Chapter and the Vermont Studio Program. While living and working in NYC for over three years, St. Clair developed a portfolio, selling artwork and making handmade artist‚s papers. Concepts for St. Clair's work are generated from stories, dreams, traveling and spending time in the garden and woods. She has made traveling to different parts of the world a priority. St. Clair has also explored the landscapes and cities of Cuba, Columbia, Ecuador and Peru finding inspiration in the colors, relationships and stories along the journey. The connection she makes with society and the human condition through her art reflects a deep sense of compassion. Photographs are taken and used as collage material; fused by paint to blur the line between the two media. The multi-layering of the images merges together to create a whimsical story with a dream-like sensibility. St.Clair sees her paintings as a visual narrative, not only in her process of making the work, layering, paint and collage, but what lies beyond that which is represented at first glance. She has been in group shows at The Carnegie (Covington, Kentucky), The Pearlman and Chidlaw Galleries (Art Academy of Cincinnati), Munich Academy of Fine Art (Munich, Germany), Parsons School of Design Gallery (New York City), KraftHous (Cincinnati, Ohio), Canal Chapter (New York, NY), Global Lead Art Gallery (Cincinnati, Ohio), The Broadway Gallery (New York, NY), Beijing Gallery (Beijing, China), and most recently Creative Gallery (Cincinnati, Ohio). Her paintings are included in the online home and garden publication: www.peggystclair.com "Gardening for Life" where she collaborates with her mother, a published author and speaker.
Currently she is represented by the Greenwich House Gallery (Cincinnati, Ohio), St. Clair's work can also be found on her website: www.katiestclair.com
