statement
I'm drawn to painting for its legacy of visual communication. I enjoy the history and tradition of painting, painting materials, the process and challenge of creating images. I feel I'm part of this ongoing connection between artists (painters), visual phenomena and what it means to be alive.
Our world is so rich because we can see it through light, shadow, color, mass and volume (space). My work is predicated by what I experience. It has most to do with the moment and my relationship to it. I'm constantly thinking about what I see as I sit, stand, walk, drive etc. I respond to my surroundings visually and then conceptually.
When I look and see, I make innumerable associations that serve as a kind of evaluation of the context where I then might think, is this something I must paint? What triggers my response might be topography, dynamic scale, ephemeral aspects of nature such as color, light or atmosphere. On the other hand, it could simply be the challenge of taking something ordinary and digging within it to discover what is extraordinary.
