statement

These abstractions refer to the possible forms and realities that might unfold just beyond our range of vision.  The human eye has access to only a fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum.  What would the world look like if we could see it all?  If we were visually sensitive to ALL varieties of light, would it change our perception of opacity/transparency, permanence/transience, past/present/future?  We can build machines that give us crude descriptions of infrared or ultraviolet light, but our eyes simply do not have the biological capability to sense those ranges of the EM spectrum as they really exist.  

I look to nature for suggestions.  We know of animals that hunt and navigate using perceptive abilities far beyond our own.  I use facts about these animals‚ vision to construct abstract compositions based on their behavior in natural environments.  

I also examine how people alter their vision to gain tactical advantages or simply enhance visual spectacles.  From thermal optics on the battlefield to the very first 3D movie, the reaction to new modes of vision has always been that of shock and fascination. I use paint to explore this idea because paint was the original vehicle for new image-based experiences. Its history of altering our ideas about the visual world is plainly chronicled in galleries, museums and cathedrals.  It seemed only fitting that I use this primal, yet still relevant, medium to consider the visual advances being made today.
