statement
My watercolor paintings are derived from romantic imagery -- some found and some imagined, always revisited and revised through the abstracting processes of painting and drawing. Eroticism, violence and sentimentality are some of the necessary currents in the work and I indulge in them freely. But I am just as interested in how narratives are implied by a picture that is never more than partially available. Conversations about gender, sexuality and the erotic female arise from the strongly stereotyped images I use that are surprising and subversive. When the language of painting is allowed to assert itself the original content is no longer dominant and something more volatile and complex begins to come to the surface. These intense emotional sensations are what Iím really after in the work. I aim for the absolute messiness of reality through the romanticism of abstraction.
