statement
I have long been fascinated by the combination of gold leaf and paint, both in medieval paintings and the pre-Raphaelite reconstructions in Victorian paintings. I have begun to use the flat yet reflective gold surface as a background for realistic portraits. I am particularly interested in the emotional transition from childhood through to adolescence and the self-consciousness and self-awareness that manifests during that transition. The use of gold leaf in the background creates reference to the spiritual evolution that takes place during this time in a childís growth.
