statement
Photography has always served a documentary function in my work, whether I am taking photos as source material for paintings or capturing images with the intent to print them with photographic processes. In this series, called "Digital Manipulation," I wanted to create a simple narrative of image making that addresses the history of photographs: from the earliest stable iron processes made with hand-coated paper to contemporary practices that use electronic sensors and computers to process the image. I also wanted to reveal photography's connection to other forms of art by making pictures that address process through both overt revelation of work (application of emulsion and the appearance of art materials in the picture) as well as the implication of work that cannot be seen in the final picture (evidence of computer manipulation with multiple hands and the fact that the final print is made with the paper seen in the picture itself).
