statement
In my ongoing series "Hollow City," I explore spaces that have been created by the frenzied development of the contemporary city. This architectural environment that is within and between hi-rise buildings has become a frontier, a boundless space of geometric forms, mirrored surfaces and transparent windows that are distant from the pedestrian perspective. Photographed at night, the city is revealed gradually with exposures that last several minutes. Light, radiating from within and below, is essential to my images. The city is given a sense of transparency and ambiguity, a place where presence is created through absence.
Using a view camera to construct and organize images allows me to see how the successive layers of architecture accumulate like distinct geologic features and how the traces of people add an overlay of complexity to the stratified architectural elements captured on film. Making distance and proximity seem indistinguishable, this space exists as a series of multiple planes that are constantly shifting, intersecting, and folding in on one another. Hollow City is a continuing exploration of how social and cultural meanings are inscribed into architectural space and the role this plays in forming our knowledge of the world and picturing ourselves within it.
