S.I.R.
Manifest Scholar in Residence
2018/2019
Angela Livezey
Angela Livezey was born in Texas in 1996 and grew up in Northwest Iowa. She received her Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting from the University of Iowa in May of 2018. At the University of Iowa she also studied and developed a passion for Jewelry and Metal Arts, Music (specifically Cello Performance), Literature, Music History, and Art History. While in undergrad Angela also had the opportunity participate in two study abroad experiences to Italy which fed her love of art history as well as informed her love of figurative and representational painting and drawing.
Artist's Statement:
“I have found drawing from direct observation to be the most intimate and meaningful way of making images. When I compare drawings that I have sourced from photographs or from imagination to drawings I have done from life, the former lack a certain richness. Sitting down and truly observing something, editing the scene, separating planes, and organizing light in real time creates an image that feels searched for, savored, and molded over time. This process and experience of drawing from observation demands from me a willingness to be present, patient, and vulnerable that I find grounding and often very humbling.”

The Scholar In Residence Program (SIR) at Manifest contrasts with the Artist In Residence Program (MAR) in a number of ways. Primarily the SIR is intended to support the study, practice, and exploration of the artist in one or more focus areas. This may be related to theory, aesthetics/criticism, teaching, studio/curricular operations, or studio-based art making. The nature of each resident's interest and focus will naturally determine the kinds of documentation provided across the year. We may, from time to time, offer examples of Angela's studio investigations or scholarly activities here as she progresses through her year at Manifest.
