statement
Seventh and Perry II is a piece from a body of work entitled On Having Left You, concerned with an interaction that takes place within a given space and the architecture within it, and the constant exchange of recontextualization that occurs between them.
I work with graphite because of its immediacy; for its vulnerability; and for the way the paper it's put to never forgets anything you do on it. No matter how hard you try and polish yourself out it will contain a mad palimpsest rhythm of work, and because the record of an artist's attempting to create something is much more interesting to me than a record of an artist's misgivings. With paper and graphite there is this self-interfering pattern as you work into it, making a bridge between how you see the world and what you are seeing.
That is the relationship that I am concerned with; the transition between the object (architecture) and the suggestion that its been reappropriated to a different occasion (i.e the ground from which it is emerging) and the loaded historical, personal and social associations that arise. The displacement that happens, the shock, is inherent in this constant coming and going again of a thing, which is intensely, almost nauseatingly detailed and seemingly ready to vanish with any moment. The permanence of the object threatened by an assailable wipe. And the very presence of it swaddled but, more importantly, supported by a potent, strict absence found everywhere around it. That tension is at the bottom of the heart of the transition I am documenting.
