My work in charcoal and graphite is based on two observations. One, objects, as we see them, don't come with outlines drawn around them. Two, Cezanne or the Cubists notwithstanding, our eyes don't see underlying cylinders, cones, and so forth; only patterns on the surface. Thus, my drawing is an effort to reproduce and develop interesting surface textures and build the work from that basic abstract pattern on up. The result is a rather complex structure that appears as one drawing from a distance, another from middle range, and strictly abstact design from close in, which is my favorite.
