statement
To me, drawing is a way of knowing. I draw observationally, often from photographs, because it fulfills a desire to understand and express the structure of things. It is a kind of knowledge that only comes through sustained attention and critical analysis of what is being observed. To me, drawing bears a strong relationship to other forms of information as a precursor to written language, an ancient way to store knowledge, and a powerful and efficient way to communicate ideas. Drawing, then, makes sense to me as a strategy for investigating the kinds of issues that I have taken up in my recent work: science, knowledge generation, and categorization of information. In my work, the act of drawing mirrors empirical research, with its emphasis on observation translated through the perspective of the observer. When I draw, I feel that I am participating in a long chain of attempts to articulate, record, store, and understand that which exists outside of ourselves. And perhaps most importantly, both the drawing and understanding processes are, in themselves, undeniably rewarding and enjoyable.
