statement

I've been drawing since my teenage years as a way of quickly looking at and talking about the relationships I observe in the world, whether it be the streets we walk, the gardens we grow, or the people we love. This work expands from the desire to share open ended stories which come from my life, but could as easily come from yours.

Painting and mixed media have developed more recently and encourage the altering, erasing, and revisiting that occur in my work. I aim to connect with history in this process. Pouring over art books, I find artists, their centuries, lives, and work; their lovers, friends and family, who by the simplest of tools, might breach time and find their way collaged into spaces of this century and place. I respond to the tactility of materials in hand, the physicality of large spaces, and the combined spiritual and sensual nature of working from life.

Throughout history, people have made things as a way of joining together.  Collage mimics this process of connecting, paralleling the traditions of building, sewing, cooking, and adapting to the needs of family, handed down from one generation to another.  This tradition, found in my family as well, is built into the making of my art.

Coming from a large family, there's always been an abundance of emotion: the noise of the living and the dying, the heartbeat of people in close proximity. I look for the nuance of subject, the beauty and determination of the everyday, and the sense of time adding up, altering and becoming.
