statement
Drawing is the fundamental basis for my work as a figurative artist. Putting pencil to paper is the impetus for all else. Having studied and taught artistic anatomy extensively, I am fascinated by the beauty and complexity of the human skeleton as a subject for drawing. These drawings evolve gradually, starting out as broad, general statements of form which steadily become more refined and specific as the drawing process moves forward. I begin by looking for the major forms, proportional relationships and alignments, using straight lines and geometric shapes to map out the essential structure. As the drawings progress, I carefully and continuously observe, measure, and adjust, refining the forms using line and value until they are highly detailed and precise. I apply this principle of working from general to specific in all of my drawings and paintings. I have taught drawing at the college level for fourteen years, and am privileged to teach currently in the Foundation Department at The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI.
