statement
These works emphasize gestural marks, abstract forms, and continuous lines. I focus on the connection between landscape and livelihood and reveal these themes through abstract representations of geographic hierarchies and political structures that dictate these realities. My collage techniques often involve cutting, tearing, ripping, re-assembling, xeroxing, then re-printing portions or fragments of the original images. I examine socio-spatial dialectics of place and identity, working simultaneously on a series of forms, gestures, and ideas that span multiple drawings.
Collage, de-collage, and photomontage are my starting points. The collage fragments come from a combination of my own photos, Fortune Magazines articles from the 1930s, and images from my own family history. These elements allow me to collapse time and space into a single two-dimensional image, a gesture that the pure act of drawing cannot provide. This enables my work to touch on aspects of time and space that otherwise could not be addressed.
