statement
As a practicing artist I work exclusively in the area of drawing, mainly graphite on paper and lately ink, I work "loose, deep and at speed. This gives me the physical and mental mobility I need to explore the main themes that interest me – autobiographical events, the uneasy relationship between landscape and industry, and cultural erosion/synthesis.
For the purposes of narrative, many are in large triptych format, but I also like to immerse the spectator in an all-embracing panoramic experience not unlike a movie screen. The cinema is one of my most potent influences.
My interest lies more in illusion than physicality that is why my large pieces are always presented, frameless and without glass. I wish them to float like wafers on the wall - without weight they can push you back or pull you in.
I like to create a tension between the complex, sometimes visually noisy presence they convey and the sheer vulnerability of their of their actual substance – large unprotected pieces of paper pinned to the wall.( I realized how delicate they were in 2002 when I lost almost all of them in a storm).
One of my agendas is to contribute to making a positive contribution to the status of drawing as a prime and terminal medium for contemporary image making. I wish to demonstrate that in scale, depth, intensity and contemporary relevance drawing can involve the spectator in a physical, emotional and conceptual engagement equal to any other media.
