Drawing
is critical to the development of my large-scale sculpture,
which requires thorough consideration prior to fabrication.
Sketches and scale drawings are crucial steps, not only in
originating ideas, but also in determining the final form
and how it will be constructed. Sketching provides a direct
exploration of ideas that is relatively rapid and mutable;
scale drawings enable me to proportion forms effectively.
My sculptures derive their abstract form partially through
utilitarian objects specifically chosen for enlargement to
monumental scale. Studying and dissecting these objects through
drawing is key to understanding their form, function and
history. Drawing on tracing paper facilitates seeing compositional
possibilities through overlaying one drawing upon another
and by eliminating the need to redraw forms that have been
determined. I am interested in creating a sculpture that
invites a shifting of perspectives that presents a multiplicity
of viewpoints ranging from the organic to inorganic. Drawing
refines the sculptural idea and the specific range of associations
and representations within the work.
