Tim Kennedy received his BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, an MFA from Brooklyn College, and he attended the Skowhegan School. Articles on his paintings have appeared in American Artist and Watercolor magazines. His most recent solo exhibition at First Street Gallery was reviewed by Maureen Mullarkey in the New York Sun. He has received Individual Artist Grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Indiana Arts Commission. In 2007 he received a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis. He has had solo exhibitions at First Street Gallery in New York City and at the Ruschman Gallery in Indianapolis. Kennedy has taught at Indiana University since 2000. His work will be included in a five-person group exhibit entitled "Small is Big" at Manifest Gallery from March 8th through April 5th.

“For several years my paintings have focused on domestic interiors and yard landscapes in and around our house in Bloomington. The people in the paintings are models, but their arrangement in the interior space loosely reflects my life here through events and situations that might actually occur. The real subject is the microcosm of the painting expressed by the texture of events in the world, color, form and light. My goal is to communicate something of the intimacy experienced in daily life.”

Level of Study: This class is appropriate for students at any level. Prior experience working from the model is helpful, but not required.

Description: Temperature as a quality is a key component in many paintings and drawings. It is usually expressed as the contrast between relatively “cool” or “warm” elements. This workshop will explore how we experience differences in temperature – are we responding to the color of light or the inherent color of the object that we are regarding such as flesh or colored cloth? Does the sensation produced by the drawing rely upon the actual material we use or the context and surroundings in which they appear?

The workshop’s approach will be to use what can be referred to as a “Bay Area” technique – meaning students will draw in a gestural fashion, working large-scale using black, white, and ochre acrylic paint in addition to other drawing materials such as charcoal and conté crayon. The class will work a few small pieces that will explore individual aspects of temperature, and end each day by doing large painted drawings of the figure in a studio setting.
