statement
For roughly ten years I have painted subjects that surround or are contained by our Craftsman home on Lincoln Street in Bloomington, Indiana. This work has resulted in a series of interiors, still lifes, town landscapes and figure compositions revolving around these subjects. The house has been my leitmotif. How light and air permeate and surround it have seemed incredibly important to me. I think of the characters in the paintings as being stand-ins for my partner and myself; figures arranged against and within its spaces mirror our life together. I record the pleasures afforded by stacked rooms glimpsed through doorways. As a painter, the envelope of the space and the domestic atmosphere are as important to me as the figure itself. The figures re-enact the quotidian activities of our daily lives as people cooking, sleeping, eating, reading, games, bathing, sex. In a larger sense, I feel that I am painting the world in ways that emphasize the qualities of the "natural" and the "intimate."
