statement
After a decade or so of plein-air painting, creating paintings with as strict of an adherence to the faithful representation of the landscape as my abilities would allow, I decided to use a number of the plein-air paintings as studies for a studio painting painted in the months when outdoor painting was infeasible. The obligation I formerly felt to nature was replaced by both formal and subjective considerations that I was unable to explore while in nature. In this way I hope to escape what Degas referred to as "nature's tyranny".
