statement
This painting is my first attempt at a pure landscape painting, where the dynamics of the landscape are more than a stage setting for figurative drama. It is also my first attempt at a landscape that was not a premier coup, not a one-shot adventure. Painted over the course of six or seven long afternoons, it was a very different kind of challenge.
In one-shot landscape paintings, air and light are the primary concerns. In this longer painting, the firm topographical reality of the Tiber River Valley became unavoidable. The color of light would change, but the grade of the hillsides, the rhythm of fields and river would remain the same. It was an exercise in revealing and recording the absolute solidity of form through the constantly variable effects of atmosphere and color.
