statement
The urban core, defined by repetition and pattern, is a complex entanglement of systems that provide city dwellers with convenience, comfort, and organization. My work is an exploration of urban patterns in all forms, be they the patterns that comprise the structures out of which the urban environment is built, the footprint of the city itself, or the human movements and interactions that occur within the city and are facilitated by the configuration of these spaces.
A pattern can be defined as representing a rule governing one working piece of a complex system, or a discovered solution that has been tested for some time, and under varying conditions. My work and research explores the vivacity and energy of the dense city center when contrasted with urban sprawl, taking note of how the constructs of these environments dictate human movement throughout these spaces.
I utilize a scientific approach to the gathering and sorting of information that guides the final outcome of my paintings. By superimposing layers of patterns and elements found in my own urban surroundings with maps documenting my movement throughout these spaces, the resulting forms create a push/pull relationship, building up areas of density contrasted with areas of vastness or sprawl. These constructed landscapes investigate the history, function, and aesthetic of the patterns from which they are formed in relation to how they facilitate utility, growth, comfort, and security within the urban condition.
