statement
My artistic practice stems from a fascination with the simplistic and desperate human desire to connect. I am continually inspired by mark-making's basic but profound ability to prove the existence of an artist to a future viewer. Far from being "creators," I view the role of artist as more curatorial in nature: editing and arranging the elements in front of us, in an attempt to communicate with others. Often calling upon digital photographic processes to preserve ephemeral imagery, I consider my primary medium to be the collection and re-framing of visual indexical data. Marks made without forethought or out of necessity are, I find, innately sincere and carry the intriguing possibility of sharing meaningful understanding with the viewer. Personal narratives are suggested but often coded beyond recognition. Details of the story are not necessarily available to the viewer, promoting wide interpretation and calling attention to the subjective quality of relating.
