statement

Image is a transversal cut into the flux of time. It is an instance expanded to a sustained moment of seeing. Seeing is an act of retaining experience of being in time-space as sensible forms. An aggregate of these sensible forms creates a subjective reality, a metaphysical dimension of memory.

Approaching image as memory, space, and site, my work has evolved like a spiral, in which conceptual and formal structure of an earlier work is condensed and enveloped by a new set of concept and form of the next work. The drawings included in INDA 7 are part of "Atlas" series.

Made of ink drawing on clear acetate rolls, the "Atlas" series are based on images that reflect personal and public events. Images drawn into this work, are abstracted and meshed together as a long abstract landscape-map. I view landscape as a contemplative space accessed through contemplative experience; and map as an interpretive field of visual signs. The spiral structure of this work reflects the structure of image, memory, and time-space in which past and present are seen on the same plane but maintain distance from each other.

Images from the "Atlas" series are further abstracted and transformed into a physical site in my latest installation project, "Surfaces." Influenced by Henri Bergson's Matter and Memory, Gilles Deleuze's rhizomatic structure of reality, and Umberto Eco's idea of surface as an encyclopedic network of heterogeneous events and concepts, this work explores image as a constantly morphing dimension where lived experiences are revived, re-associated, transformed, and dissolved as events, signs, and sensations. This project is made of recycled rubber and its estimate dimension is 30ft x 50ft.
