statement
These works are part of a series concentrating on the representation of people I run across on a regular basis. They are all members of the local arts community, and I show them either unaware as they attend local art receptions, or posing for me while they go about their daily responsibilities. Contemporary people give off subtle clues as to the culture and social groupings they inhabit, and I hope viewers can identify with the people I depict.
I work in charcoal on plywood, which I often cut out in various ways depending on the piece. I will occasionally add additional elements or media to a work, such as metal leaf, screen-printing, heavy resin, and found objects. I also cut out many of the figures completely so as to use them in groupings that I can place anywhere within a gallery so as to increase the impact of their presence. Most of my people can either be mounted on the wall or attached to bases that I randomly place over the floor area when I do gallery installations. When I do 2 person exhibits, my people appear to be "attending" the other artist's exhibit.
